Hypertension Triples Women's Diabetes Risk
Women with high blood pressure are up to threefold more prone to developing type 2 diabetes compared to women with optimal blood pressure, says a study published in the Oct. 9 issue of "European Heart Journal." The correlation was independent of other factors that can boost the likelihood of getting diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Harvard School of Public Health.
The researchers monitored the health of more than 38,000 female health professionals for more than a decade, with all women initially free from diabetes or cardiovascular disease. The women were divided into four categories based on their blood pressure, and after 10 years, 9.4 percent of the women in the high blood pressure category had developed type 2 diabetes, compared to 5.7 percent in the high-normal group, 2.9 percent in the normal group, and 1.4 percent in the optimal group. After taking into account such factors as age, smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass index, exercise, and family history of diabetes, the scientists concluded that the risk of diabetes among women with high blood pressure was still three times greater than for women with optimal blood pressure. The researchers suggested that the correlation may be related to endothelial dysfunction--an interruption in normal biochemical functions performed by the cells that line the inner surfaces of blood vessels.
