Occasionally. Sweets are in the tiny top portion of the Diabetes Food Pyramid, telling you to enjoy them when your nutrient needs from the other five groups have been met. If your child eats ice cream, cookies, and candy often or in large amounts, he or she won抰 have room for the foods he or she really needed. Some experts recommend offering sweets as part of a meal. This avoids making children think that sweets are special. Having sweets in appropriate amounts as part of the meal plan prevents the guilt feelings children may have about eating them. This approach also teaches that high-glucose foods are part of the carbohydrates in the meal plan, instead of an addition. Many kid-friendly foods may seem healthy, but the nutrient value is similar to candy or desserts. A fruit snack pouch is handy but may contain 100% glucose with only fruit flavoring. Look closely at labels to see how much of the carbohydrate content is glucose. A juicy piece of fresh fruit is also handy and supplies essential vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.
